2015 Week 50: I enjoyed reading these posts

image

To clear things up, know that Press It is the main idea behind this post.

Now, lets get to it. Shall we?

***

Last week, I read many posts. Yet, the ones that stood out enough for me to highlight were posted on Mashable, MTV and Inc .

1). Mashable:

This post was titled “Kim Kardashian Hollywood somehow got us to spend real money on fake life“.

According to the Mashable post, the Kim Kardashian Hollywood app was a hit. It pocketed $1.6M in its first five days of release.

My thoughts: I tried to imagine why people would want to use this app. I later figured that this app really has a sentimental value. Majority of people who spent real money on the app wanted to feel the experience of the A-list celebrity life.

From a marketing-psychology perspective, I’d say this app made (and still makes) good cash because it tapped into the intangible needs of so many people – the need for social value and recognition.

Have you tried smiling with your eyes before? (Yep, I’m not sure I could do it CONSCIOUSLY) Well, the Kim Kardashian Hollywood App can teach you that ‘valuable skill’.

2). MTV:

This MTV post is about a model named Essena O’Neill. She quit Instagram because of her reconfigured self-image. In fact, the post title said it all; “The Model Who Quit Social Media Reveals How Instagram Twisted Her Sense of Body Image“.

In the post, there is a link to an O’Neill video.

In the video, she is said to have spoken about her obsession with achieving the perfect body.

In a quote from the video, O’Neill said “I was happy when I looked like the girls that I admired when I was younger.”

My thoughts: The perfect body structure is a myth. Skipping meals and settling for unhealthy physical goals can negatively affect a person’s later sense of self. In the extreme cases, death might occur.

Social Media is here to stay. It is very important for you to know who you listen to – coz some feeds are just not healthy – in the long run, they dry up the soul.

P.S.: In the MTV post, there is a link to Essena O’Neill‘s video.

3) Inc:

This year, Gravity Payments has gained a stronger press coverage – all thanks to CEO Dan Price decision to establish a $70,000 minimum wage at his [Gravity Payments] company.

It is interesting to learn how his decision is influencing the American business community.

Here’s a little highlight from the Inc article titled: “Here’s What Really Happened at That Company That Set a $70,000 Minimum Wage“.

i) #imwithdan is the face of this wage debate.

ii) Professors at Harvard Business School asked to study Dan Price’ experiment in paying workers.

iii) Currently, Gravity Payment revenue is growing at double digit rates. Hence, countering various spells of doom for the company.

iv) The Gravity Payment customer retention rate rose from 91% to 95%.

My thoughts: I like this Dan Price guy. He’s a guy who dreams big. He is ready to restructure his finances and relationships to make things happen – now that’s a statement.

This Dan Price guy has got balls and a strong dose of faith.

I love faith.

When you’re on the path of faith, you’ll take actions that position you for greater successes.

And so I’m wishing Dan Price the best of favours. I believe everything will turn out fine for him.

STOP STOPPING. GO SUCCEED IN YOUR CORE EXPERTISE!

Being an expert requires action. You have to be committed to the improvement of your craft. Things change over time. Innovations improve over time.

We all get curious of different stuff. This curiosity will continue to lead us as a human race to take numerous decisions that will favour the advancement of the human race.

It’s easy to think of coming up with different reasons for the quality of work you do. But the truth still remains: if you want to succeed, you have to be committed to your personal and professional development.

As the government are doing their own part to develop the economy [at their own pace 🙂 oinks!!!!], you are solely responsible to develop your own individual economy. Your expertise is your responsibility to think of, to care for, and to nourish. You don’t have to depend on other people for ALL your ideas. Go out and search for information. But don’t stop there coz it’s very possible to fall into a state of analysis paralysis.

Success needs dreams – a continuous use of the power of the mind – and a commitment to take action. It doesn’t matter if your action is huge or small. You just have to take that action.

To take action in the right direction, you will have to set goals, control your use of technology, and learn to solve problems in your field.

SET GOALS

The quality of your life will depend on the quality of your priorities.

What are your priorities? If you’re not sure of it or you’ve never taken some time out to think about your life, well, I’ll tell you.

There are three kinds of priorities.
1. Priorities marked High
2. Priorities marked Medium
3. Priorities marked Low

You are responsible for determining the level of your priorities. A careful analysis of your personal and professional activities will tell you about your priorities.

The activities you value most are the priorities that are marked high. The ones you mark as medium are the ones that can be postponed until a future date. The priorities you mark as low can be those activities that you can always cross off your list for a better alternative that can happen impromptu.

To restructure your activities to succeed in your core expertise, you have to set goals.

Goals are your door to more opportunities for personal and professional advancement. You have to have plans – and those plans have to be consistent with the principle of abundant life.

You goals should move you forward. They should move you to be more, do more and have more.

To make your goals work for you, make it SMART.

SMART means your goals have to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-oriented and Timely.

CONTROL YOUR USE OF TECHNOLOGY

Technology can be useful in a lot of ways. On the other hand, technology can be harmful to your productivity.

A look into the life of successful professional people will let you in on one secret: they control their use of technology and not the reverse. They understand that tech can fail too. I suggest you start writing your to-do-lists on a piece of paper and ‘pocket’ that phablet for the next two hours.

In fact, your control of technology can add more control to your time. You’ll know when to stop using a particular piece of tech and leave that building for a drink with the people you care about.

Let technology be the tool that can help you do your work faster and better.

LEARN TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN YOUR FIELD

Every field of expertise exists to solve problems.

If there are no problems in your intended profession, there will be nothing for you to do. That also means that there will be nothing for you to earn.

This is because your ability to grow in a FULFILLING career is tied to your ability to solve problems in your profession. And your ability to solve problems in your profession will determine the quality of professional people you meet.

FINALLY…

All skills are learnable. You can learn whatever topic that you’re interested in – if only you’re determined enough. Nothing on earth can stop you except you.

Of course, that’s why there are professional schools everywhere.

Choose your area of interest. Learn your craft. And become better at what you do.
STOP STOPPING. GO SUCCEED IN YOUR CORE EXPERTISE!

But before that…

IT’S NOW OVER TO YOU…

What’s your experience on having goals to achieve? Do you find it easy to set goals? Or do you just go about your career with the ‘whatever-comes’ mindset? Let’s talk about’em in the comments.

Writers Are Not Losers

Yes, you heard me right. Writers are not losers. They’re all potential winners.

It doesn’t feel good to see how certain people refer to writers as losers. A writer is not a loser. It’s one of those stupid myths out there.

Writing was not my dream. For me, it’s one of the essential skills I have to develop because of its benefits to my long term career goals.

But interestingly, I have come to know a number of writers online. They dreamed of that status – that prestige – of being called a writer.

I have also come to know that most of them have spent years writing in practice. They devoted more than ninety percent of their leisure time to express themselves by using the written word. Until the mass availability of computers, many of them wrote on paper. They didn’t care whether the paper was white or brown or stained. They just wrote. They wrote out their anger. They wrote out their pain.

These awesome people still write everyday.

They write at work. They write at home. The write when they are happy. They write when they are sad. The write when they feel healthy and they also write when they’re sick.

And so I’m using this opportunity to encourage all you writers, don’t let anybody put you down. From my blogging experience so far, I’ve learnt that it takes discipline and continuous dedication to become a better writer.

I don’t care if they call you a nerd or a geek or they mock you, just ignore the fools out there.

The human race keep developing because of the awesome jobs that writers do. With the growing number of writers and bloggers around the world, I can confidently say that writers are not losers. In fact, history has repeatedly shown us that even losers are potential winners.

All in all, writers are winners. As a writer, you may not have won yesterday. You may not even win today or tomorrow morning. But you will surely win. Ther’s no need to be anxious on it.

Dedicate your time to improving your craft. Eventually, the world will come to pay you for the value you created – that brings like to mankind.

Life never forgets dedicated writers. You will be rewarded.

Keep it up folks. Well done!
